What are Analytics?

Web analytics involves collection, analysis and reporting of data related to website visitors for purpose of optimizing web content... In other words, it's a very detailed way to measure traffic on our website.

Understanding how visitors use our site helps us make more informed decisions about how to improve it. It also tells us about our audience and their interests.

Why we use Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free, user-friendly service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. It displays high level dashboard-type data for the casual user, and more in-depth data further into the report set. Through the use of Google Analytics analysis, web publishers can track page traffic, identify where visitors come from and how long they stay, and determine the geographical position of their audience.

How does it work

Each of the MCG web pages contains code to collect information about visitors. Google Analytics tracks how visitors interact with a website, which is then presented in easy-to-read, visual reports. Google Analytics does not affect the performance or the appearance of our website.

How do I get access to my website's analytics?

MCG web publishers who are interested in accessing the analytics for their department's website need to first create a google account using their current MCG email account address.

Once you have created a google account, notify Web Content that you would like access to the MCG analytics account, and we'll give you access to the MCG analytics reports so that you may track the web traffic and usage information associated with www.mcg.edu.

For assistance with creating and using a Google Analytics account, please see the documentation pages linked in the menu on this page.
