2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipients

Dr. Alva Mayes, M.D.

Dr. Mayes, a 1956 graduate, is a retired pediatrician from Macon, Ga.  He also is an associate clinical professor of pediatrics and a faculty preceptor for the Department of Community Medicine at the Mercer University School of Medicine.  Dr. Mayes is a former president of the Bibb County Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia and the MCG School of Medicine Alumni Association. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Southern Perinatal Society and the Governor’s Council on Maternal and Infant Health.  Dr. Mayes is a past recipient of the Bibb County Medical Society’s Physician of the Year Award and the Medical Association of Georgia’s Distinguished Service Award.

 

Dr. Roy Vandiver, M.D.

Dr. Vandiver, a neurosurgeon, is a 1959 graduate of the School of Medicine. He is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the MAG Mutual insurance company in Atlanta.  He is a delegate to the American Medical Association and a board member of the group’s Political Action Committee. He is a past president of the Medical Association of Georgia, the DeKalb Medical Society and the Georgia Neurological Society.  Dr. Vandiver is a member of the Southern Neurological Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Vandiver also serves as vice chair of the DeKalb Hospital Authority and a board member of the DeKalb Medical Center, the DeKalb Hospital Authority and the Mountain National Bank.
