Distinguished Alumnus Award for Loyalty
Dr. Roy Witherington, MCG Professor Emeritus of Surgery (Urology),
earned his medical degree with honors from MCG in 1953 and completed an MCG
urology residency in 1960. He served on the faculty from 1960 until his
retirement in 1997. He also had a full-time urology practice in Augusta from
1961-72 and served as president of the Georgia Urological Association from
1967-68.
He is a past president of the Southeastern Section of the American
Urological Association, Inc., the Medical Research Foundation of Georgia and
the Rinker-Witherington Urologic Society. He received the American
Urological Association’s 1997 Gold Cane Award and the American Medical
Association’s 1997 Physician’s Recognition Award.
Distinguished Alumnus Award for Professional Achievement
Dr.
John R. Woodard, who earned his medical degree from MCG in
1957 and completed a pediatric urology fellowship in New York
Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, retired in 1999 after serving as director
of pediatric urology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta
and as chief of urology at Egleston Children’s Hospital at Emory. He also
held faculty appointments at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., and the
University of West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
He is a past president of the Georgia Urological Society and the Society for
Pediatric Urology. He was named Teacher of the Year by Emory urology
students in 1992 and received the American Academy of Pediatrics Urology
Medal in 2000.
