
Dr. William L. Lanier, Jr. ('80)
Rochester, Minn., recently was named editor in chief of Mayo
Clinic Proceedings, the world's third-largest circulation
indexed general/internal medicine journal. He is professor of anesthesiology
at Mayo Medical School.
Dr. James J. Wynn (’80)
Chief of the MCG Section of General Surgery, has been named
to the Carlos and Marguerite Mason Chair in Transplant Surgery and Immunology.
The chair was established at MCG by the Atlanta-based Mason Trust to enhance
MCG’s research and clinical activities in transplantation.
Dr. Mark F. Ellison ('82)
Mark was honored recently for his "distinguished service
and dedication in the fight against cancer" by the Clarke-Oconee
Unit of the American Cancer Society Auxiliary. He was a guest of honor
during the unit's 31st annual Gala Ball and Silent Auction Dec. 3, 2000
in Athens, Ga. The event was part of the Classic City Christmas Weekend
coordinated annually by the auxiliary to raise funds for cancer research,
education and treatment.
Dr. F. Stuart Sanders ('82)
Clarkesville, Ga., an internal and sports medicine physician,
has been named president of the Heart and Lung Foundation. He is a clinical
associate professor of cardiology at the Emory University School of Medicine;
director of the Habersham Cardiac Disease Reversal and Rehabilitation,
Pulmonary Rehabilitation and LIFE Preventive Medicine Programs; director
of sports medicine at Piedmont College; and past vice president of the
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Dr.
Gerald Holmes ('83 School of Medicine and '84 Department of Physiology)
Is chief of pediatric cardiology and director of the Children's Hospital
Heart Center at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in
Albuquerque, N.M. His wife, Joanna, holds dual certification in pediatric
and adult cardiac sonography. They have a 2-year old daughter, Heather
Elyse.

Dr.
David C. Jones ('83)
has opened a free-standing independent cancer center in San Marcos Texas.
The Center for Cancer Care is a rousing success, thanks to his top-quality
medical training at MCG, and his business degree from the University of
Georgia didn't hurt. Dr. Jones is married to his college sweetheart, Jane
Seabolt Jones of Jefferson, GA.

WillieNell Bryant Pitts ('83)
Enid, Oklahoma, is a pediatrician specializing in developmental disabilities
and mental retardation. She and her husband, the Rev. Cornelius Pitts,
have a son, Michael Elijah, who has been named one of Oklahoma's three
semifinalists in the 38th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program,
an academic competition for black American high school students. Elijah
and approximately 1,500 scholastically promising high school seniors will
continue to compete for more than 700 achievement scholarship awards,
worth some $2.5 million, that will be offered next spring for college
undergraduate study.

Jeri R. Carr (’84)
Manassas, Va., died Dec. 15, 2001 at age 43. She began private
practice in neurology in Woodbridge and Manassas, Va., in 1988. She was
president of the Prince William County (Virginia) Medical Society in 1995.
She was past chairwoman of the Department of Medicine at Potomac Hospital
in Woodbridge and Prince William Hospital in Manassas. Dr. Carr was a
member of the Medical Society of Virginia and head of its Women's Membership
Section. Survivors include her husband, Dr. William M. Carr ('81), a sister,
grandmother, uncle and nephew.

Joy A. Maxey (’84)
Was named one of 10 Women of Distinction for 2002 by the
Georgia/Tennessee Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

Frank A. Honkanen ('86)
Residency in Pathology at Duke 86-91; has a private practice in Pathology
in Huntsville, Al from 1991 to present. Has a son, Matt, born in 1991,
and a daughter Leah, born in 1996 - all healthy and doing well.

Dr.
Kay Mitchell ('86)
Has been elected to the American Medical Association Council on Medical
Education. The council works with national organizations to set and monitor
policy regarding medical education, residency training and continuing
education. Dr. Mitchell specializes in internal medicine.

Dr.
Brian K. Brzowski ('88)
Ogden, Utah, recently was granted fellowship in the American College
of Surgeons and membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
