Dr. Cathy J. Hatcher (Ph.D. in physiology, '98)
Recently presented a paper, "TBX 5 (A Transcription Factor) Regulation of
Cell Proliferation Mediates Cardiac Morphogenesis" at the 72nd Scientific
Sessions of the American HeartAssociation in Atlanta. She is a
postdoctoral fellow in cell and molecular biology at Cornell University
Medical Center in Manhattan, N.Y.
Dr. James Bradley Summers (Master's Pharmacology/Toxology '97)
Has completed his medical internship at the University of South Alabama
Medical Center in Mobile and is beginning a residency program in
diagnostic radiology at the same institution. He completed his graduate
studies at MCG under the tutelage of Dr. Jerry Buccafusco.
Dr. Ptiene Minick (Ph.D., '92)
And her co-authors won an award in the education category of the 1999 AORN
Journal Writers Contest for their article, "Clinical Decision-Making
Process in Preoperative Nursing."
Dr. Darrell W. Brann (physiology, '90)
Associate professor in the Department of Physiology, organized and chaired
a symposium titled "Neurobiology of the GnRH Neuron" at the Experimental
Biology 2000 meeting in San Diego, Calif., April 15-18. Dr. Brann also
presented a talk in the symposium titled "Astrocyte-Neuronal Interactions
and Control of GnRH Secretion." Other topics included new experimental
models for the study of GnRH neuron physiology and function, homeodomain
proteins that regulate the GnRH gene, and differentiation, migration and
neuroprotection of GnRH neurons. The symposium was sponsored by the
Endocrinology & Metabolism and Central Nervous Systems sections of the
American Physiological Society. Over 6,000 scientists worldwide attended
the Experimental Biology 2000 meeting.
Dr. Brooks A. Keel (Endocrinology, '82)
who earned a Ph.D. in endocrinology in 1982 joined the faculty of Florida
State University April 1 as associate vice president for research and
professor of biomedical sciences. He will oversee research regulatory
compliance matters for FSU's 17 colleges and schools. He also will
coordinate and facilitate research in FSU's new College of Medicine.
Before joining FSU, Dr. Keel was associate dean for research at the
University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, where he established the
Women's Research Institute and the Reproductive Medicine Laboratories. In
1995, he was named the first recipient of the university's Daniel K.
Roberts Distinguished Professorship, an endowed chair in obstetrics and
gynecology.
Dr. William D. Davenport, Jr. (Anatomy, '76)
Has been appointed by the American Dental Association's Joint Commission
on National Board Examinations to serve on the Dental Hygiene Part B
National Board Test Construction Committee. Dr. Davenport is a member of
the Anatomic Sciences Test Construction Committee, which composes the Part
I-Anatomical Sciences portion of the Dental National Board Examination. He
also served on the committee from 1977 to 1982. In 1983, he served on an
ad hoc committee appointed by the ADA Joint Commission on National Board
Examinations to study the oral biology content on Dental National Boards.
He is an associate professor of oral pathology and associate professor of
cell biology and anatomy at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry
in New Orleans. He also is coordinator of support technologies and
director of the research histology laboratory.
