How to help keep our campus tobacco free

  1. When you see someone using tobacco on campus, try saying—
“Excuse me, but are you aware that ours is a tobacco-free campus? The use of tobacco products is not allowed anywhere on our property.”

  2. If the person asks, “Where can I go to smoke?” say—
“Since we are trying hard to create a healthy environment for everyone, we don’t provide a place for people to smoke.
You may want to leave our campus for a little while to give you the opportunity to smoke.”

Other Points:

  • You may need to keep repeating the same phrase:
“We are a tobacco-free facility so we don’t allow tobacco anywhere on the premises.”
(Some people may not be familiar with what a “tobacco-free campus” means.)
  • You should not say whether you agree or disagree with the policy.
  • You should not “blame” the MCG, MCGHI, or PPG administration for the decision, but merely state that the organization has become a healthier place to work and visit.

If the person becomes verbally abusive or refuses to comply, walk away and call security (MCG Public Safety, 1-2911 • MCGHI Safety & Security, 1-4787)
