Safety and Security
Key Control and ID Badging
Maximum security locks are in place in each room and apartment in
Residences 4, 5, 6 and the Alumni Center. Room and outside door
keys that cannot be duplicated except by the facilities management
lock shop are issued to students. If a student fails to return keys
or if keys are lost, the lock cylinder must be changed and a new key
is issued.
The Public Safety Key Control and ID Badging Office issues Photo
ID Badges to each student during orientation. These ID badges must
be worn at all times while on campus. There is a $10 replacement fee
for lost ID badges. Students must notify Public Safety at 721-2911
immediately when a badge is lost or stolen.
Escort Service
Public Safety provides a 24-hour escort service to students.
Students may be escorted anywhere on campus by calling 721-2911.
Students are urged not to walk alone on campus, especially after
dark.
Ring Down Telephone
Ring down phones are strategically located in the residence hall
areas and in the parking areas adjacent to the residence halls.
These phones provide a direct line to the public safety dispatcher.
Students may use these phones in emergencies or to request service
assistance from public safety.
Paraprofessional Staff
Community Assistants are assigned to Residences 4, 5, 6 and the
Alumni Center to enhance safety and security. Community Assistants
are trained to assist students by conducting residence hall programs
that include various safety-related programs.
Security
In order to promote residence hall security, students are urged to
keep their room/apartment doors and windows locked at all times.
Students should not leave personal items in stairwells or outside
the residence halls. Outside doors are part of the security system
also and should remain locked at all times. At no time should the
doors be propped open.
Fire Safety
Each residence hall has an evacuation plan in the event of a fire,
and this plan, as well as other important safety information, is
posted on the inside door of every unit. Residence halls participate
in required fire drills. Anytime the fire alarm is activated or
students are informed of an emergency situation, they are required
to evacuate the building and there are NO EXCEPTIONS. Tampering with
or the misuse of fire safety equipment is prohibited. This includes
removing or disabling the smoke detector. If a smoke detector needs
to be replaced, please contact the Office of Residence Life at
721-3471. Fire safety equipment includes, but is not limited to fire
alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and unit door closers.
Anyone apprehended for vandalizing or using fire safety equipment
for any purpose other than safety will be reported to Public Safety.
Additional fire safety information may be obtained from the
Environmental Health and Safety website.
Smoke Alarms
Each apartment/room is equipped with an electrically powered smoke
alarm, with a 1.5 hour battery emergency power system, to warn
students in case of smoke or fire.
Night Survey
Every month, a campus wide night survey is conducted in order to
determine if areas on campus have proper lighting. The community and
parking areas are inspected and recommendations, if needed, are
proposed.
Peep Holes
A peephole is in place in the front door of each apartment/room. The
student is able to clearly view someone outside of the door.
House Watch Program
This program offers students a procedure to notify Public Safety
that their residence hall room/apartment will be unoccupied and
request security checks while they are away. Request forms are
available at public safety. Students may drop the form off at the
public safety building or give the form to a public safety officer
to register for the program. Once the student has registered for the
program, public safety officers will make frequent checks of the
area until the student returns. If anything occurs at your residence
hall room/apartment while you are away, Public Safety will notify
the contact person listed on the registration form.
Campus Crime Statistics (Clery Act)
Campus crime statistics may be obtained by contacting the Public
Safety Division, the Campus Safety Committee or the
Public Safety web site.
Crime statistics, compliance statements and daily crime log may
be viewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Public Safety
Division, HT 1101. Additional crime information can be obtained
during normal business hours.
Operation ID
The engraving of personal items is an excellent way to promote the
recovery of lost or stolen property. Public Safety has engravers
that can be checked out by students. It is recommended that items
over $50.00 in value be marked for easy identification.
