Services and Programs
International Student and Scholar Advisement
The Office of Student Diversity advises Medical College of Georgia units on selected immigration
issues in support of the academic programs and research enterprises.
Specific areas of responsibility include international and immigration
issues that relate to students, as well as faculty and staff J-1
Exchange Visitors. As the office responsible for the administration
of the exchange visitor (J-1) and non-immigrant student (F-1) programs,
the Office of Student Diversity is MCG’s interface through the Student and Exchange Visitor
Information System with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the
U.S. Department of State.
Minority Academic Advisement Program (MAAP)
At MCG, the University System of Georgia Minority Advising Program
functions under the heading of Minority Academic Advisement Program (MAAP).
The program supplements the regular academic support and social support
provided within each of the schools. The
campus-wide
tutorial program administered by the School of Medicine's Office of
Special Academic Programs is a MAAP function. The Minority Advising
Program and the Minority Recruitment Plan was established in 1983 to
address the specific problems faced by minority students within the
University System of Georgia that affect their recruitment and
retention. Originally, the Minority Advising Program and the Minority
Recruitment Plan were a part of the 1983 Addendum to the 1978
Desegregation Plan. After the University System of Georgia was relieved
of reporting to the Office of Civil Rights in 1985-86, the Minority
Advising Program and the Minority Recruitment Plan continued, as a
System effort, to promote the recruitment and retention of minority
students.
The Chief Administrative Officer for MAAP at MCG is Dr. Barry D.
Goldstein, Provost. The MAAP Coordinator for MCG is Ms. Beverly Y.M.
Tarver, Director of Student Diversity.
Fort Valley State University - MCG Pipeline Initiative
The overall purpose of the Fort Valley
State University-Medical College of Georgia Pipeline Initiative
is to increase the number of minority medical and other health
professionals via a collaborative effort between FVSU and MCG at
the middle-school, secondary school and undergraduate levels.
The collaborative agreement
includes seven informational sessions conducted by MCG faculty, staff
and student representatives on the FVSU campus from September through
April. MCG serves as host for campus tours for FVSU summer program
participants and student groups as well as provides materials and
support to the program.
Community Luncheon Series
The Community Luncheon Series (seven luncheons from September to May)
offers MCG students and others in the MCG community the opportunity to
interface with campus and community resources on topics of current
interest. The Student Government Association provides support for the
Community Luncheon Series.
