Tobacco Cessation Clinic (Click here for Sessions/Treatments)

The Tobacco Cessation Clinic is a patient/ family centered clinic facilitated by certified advanced practice nurses (clinical nurse specialist in psychiatry/ mental health, family nurse practitioner, and adult/acute care nurse practitioner) with over 50 years of combined clinical and tobacco cessation experience.

 

The School of Nursing (SON) has two doctoral prepared, advanced practice nursing faculty who manage and operate the Tobacco Cessation Clinic:

Sharon Bennett, DNP, APRN-BC - Director of Clinical Services

Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC - Director of Clinical Operations

 

These faculty members are leading innovative research, practice, and education initiatives targeting tobacco control, and are primed to lead tobacco cessation initiatives at the local, state, and national levels.  In addition, the program faculty are recognized nationally for their expertise with implementing and evaluating quit smoking programs, teaching tobacco cessation, and leading research initiatives related to tobacco control.      

  

Initiative

Immediate Goals for the Tobacco Cessation Program, include:

Expanding the current smoking cessation treatment program for all patients (inpatient and outpatient), family members, and employees at the Medical College of Georgia.  The SON has three certified smoking cessation counselors with expertise with behavioral counseling (individual, group) and pharmacological management, space availability (Health Sciences Building) for outpatient tobacco cessation treatment programs and faculty availability for inpatient consultation and outpatient services.

    

Expanding Tobacco Education Initiatives by training all students and faculty in MCG clinical health programs (Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health, Nursing), all local health providers and students (local community colleges/universities, system/community health providers) and all students and faculty in clinical health programs in state of Georgia.

Expanding  Tobacco Research by obtaining R01 funding to implement multi-site randomized control trial, work with MCG Cancer Center (Dr. Bhalla) to facilitate interdisciplinary tobacco related grant submissions, hire senior tobacco researcher to expand the tobacco research portfolio at MCG and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, especially with basic scientists to enhance translational research.

 Expanding Tobacco Leadership work with Dr. Bhalla to establish Tobacco Control Institute, with goals of CDC funded institute in 3-5 years, continue speaker's bureau with pharmaceutical industry, continue national consultations with practice, education, and research initiatives.

Expanding partnerships with other institutions (Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard, Georgetown, Vanderbilt University, University of California, San Francisco, Purdue, and others).
