 ISC Center Staff

 

 

Center Director: Lori Schumacher, PhD, RN, CCRN

 

Dr. Schumacher is the Simulation Center Director and has been involved with simulation at the School of Nursing since 2000.  Dr. Schumacher’s research interests include investigating the utilization of simulation in academia and in the healthcare setting, critical thinking and clinical decision making, and learning outcomes.  She serves as a simulation consultant and is on the editorial board for the journal Simulation in Healthcare.  Dr. Schumacher envisions the benefits of utilizing simulation and promotes the new, creative innovations such as the integration of simulation into curriculi, continuing education courses, and healthcare professional training and development. Dr. Schumacher holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Creighton University, a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota, and a PhD in nursing from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

 

Center Coordinator: John Gillespie

 

As Center Coordinator, John Gillespie is responsible for the day to day operation of the Interdisciplinary Simulation Center. Mr. Gillespie joined the SON faculty in 2005, bringing with him a wealth of practical simulation knowledge and expertise. After retiring from a 23-year career as customer service representative with USAirways, Mr. Gillespie began his work in simulation at the University of Louisville School of Medicine as a Patient Simulation Technician and went on to receive his certification as an Anesthesia Technician. From there he served METI as the Coordinator of the company’s Education and Training Services. He now applies his extensive skills in the roll of coordination of all activities in the Interdisciplinary Simulation Center and provides the crisis management component to the simulations that take place in the center.

 

Center Engineer: David E. Schumacher, A.B.Ed, BSEE

David Schumacher is a retired Electrical Engineer who provides technological services to the center on a part-time basis.  Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Schumacher worked for 18 years with AT&T Network Systems/Lucent Technologies, where managed the development of business and residential software features.  He also worked in Information Technology (IT) where his group managed IT resources for over 14,000 end users at a major Lucent Technologies location through the Y2K era.  Mr. Schumacher earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University and a B.A. in Education from the University of Michigan.  In his role with the simulation center, he applies his technical problem solving skills to assist in the training of the next generation of healthcare professionals.
