Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunities

 

  Rebecca Andrews Scholarship Award

The Rebecca Andrews Scholarship Award was established in January 1994 in memory of Rebecca Andrews, a 1984 graduate of the Masters Program in Adult Nursing.  She served the Medical College of Georgia in many capacities:  Staff Nurse, Neonatal ICU, Senior Staff Nurse, Emergency Services; Clinical Coordinator/Instructor, EMT-Paramedic Program; Staff Development Coordinator, Ambulatory Care Services; Trauma Coordinator, Department of Surgery; and Director, Emergency Services. 

Mrs. Andrews was admired and respected as an outstanding clinician and leader by her colleagues in the health care arena, throughout the Augusta community, as well as regionally.  She served as an exemplary role model for nurses, students, and other health care providers.  She died December 20, 1993, following a seven-month battle with brain cancer.  By the request of Mrs. Andrews, this award will be given to two students:  one undergraduate and one graduate.  The undergraduate student award is based on the applicant’s interest in Emergency Nursing.  An award of $250 will be given.

 

A.     The applicant must:

    1. be a currently enrolled senior BSN student,
    2. submit a scholarly paper on Emergency Nursing which should include the applicant’s interest in Emergency Nursing,
    3. submit two letters of recommendation from  a SON faculty member and/or a former employer,
    4. have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or greater,
    5. provide a current curriculum vitae/resume.

B.     The paper will be judged on:

    1. clarity of thought/readability,
    2. originality.

C.     The judges will consist of two SON faculty members appointed by the Assistant Dean and the MCGHI Director of     Emergency Services or his/her designee.

 

Students with work and/or student clinical experience in the emergency room are highly encouraged to apply.


Rhonda and Lloyd Graybeal Endowment Award for Pediatric Nursing

This award was established by Rhonda and Lloyd Graybeal to recognize a graduating senior who best demonstrates the pursuit of excellence in Pediatric Nursing.  An award of $200 will be given.  Deserving students must be nominated by a nursing faculty member.  The student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a graduating senior
  2. Demonstrate a commitment to practicing as a pediatric nurse in the Children’s Medical Center, MCGHI
  3. Demonstrate academic excellence

 


E. Louise Grant Clinical Practice Award

The E. Louise Grant Clinical Practice Award was established by Dean Emeritus E. Louise Grant in 1982.  This award is given to a senior BSN student with outstanding clinical practice and clinical standards.  An award of $100 will be given.

 

To apply for this award, the student must meet the following criteria:

1.  Maintain a ‘B’ average in each nursing course

2.  Set his/her own standards for patient care practice in all settings

3.  Envision goals to be accomplished, set nursing objectives and design plans for outcomes to be achieved

4.  Patient or client feels secure with plan provided

5.  Apply practice knowledge based on scientific principles

6.  Includes health teaching with patients and families

7.  Is accountable for his/her own acts

8.  Evaluates his/her practice in terms of outcomes of each patient

9.  Is a professional role model worthy of emulation

 

The applicant should submit a copy of two clinical evaluations from the junior year and two clinical evaluations from the senior year.  The applicant should also submit a clinical paper to be evaluated on the following criteria:

 

1.  Patient presentation and synthesis of information

2.  Ability to write a physical assessment

3.  Interpretation of data (laboratory and medications)

4.  Ability to prioritize patient problems/nursing diagnosis

5.  Critical interventions


 

Lillian D. Wald Community Nursing Clinical Practice Award

Established in 1984, this award honors the outstanding senior student for clinical practice in community nursing. A $200 award is given.  Deserving students must be nominated by a nursing faculty member who has facilitated the community learning experience.  The student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a graduating BSN student

  2. Maintain a “B” average in each nursing course

  3. Has demonstrated practice that reflects the definition and role of the public health (community) nurses defined by the American Public Health Association (1996):

Public health nursing is a practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health services.


 

Hildegard Peplau/Lore K. Wright Award

This award is given in memory of Dr. Hildegard Peplau, a leader in psychiatric nursing, and Dr. Lore K. Wright, past Chair, of the MCG Department of Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing.  Endowed by Dr. Victor Wright in 2007, this $400 award is given to a senior nursing student who exemplifies excellence in the application of psychotherapeutic interventions with clients.

The deserving student must be nominated by his/her clinical instructor, and meet the following criteria:

  1. Maintain a “B” average or higher in all undergraduate nursing courses;
  2. Demonstrate the ability to provide superior mental health-psychiatric nursing care to clients.

 

Drs. Ellis and Murphy RN-BSN Award

The RN to BSN award was established in 1996 to recognize an RN-BSN student who best exemplifies professional nursing practice.  The award honors Dr. Linda Ellis and Dr. Marguerite Murphy who were instrumental in the development and implementation of the distance learning program for RNs to complete their BSN degree.  A $500 award is given.

The student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Maintain a 3.5 GPA

  2. Demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning

  3. Submit a resume that highlights leadership activities

  4. Submit a one page essay describing how the baccalaureate degree enhances his/her professional nursing practice

  5. Submit two letters of support from faculty addressing the student’s commitment to life-long learning, leadership and potential to make a difference in nursing and health care.


Dr. Katherine E. Nugent Student Nurses’ Association Leadership Award

Established in 1995 in honor of Katherine E. Nugent, RN, PhD, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, MCG School of Nursing, this award recognizes a distinguished member of the Student Nurses’ Association who exemplifies the highest ideals of leadership; possesses and demonstrates vision, integrity, commitment, dedication, creative energy, and a strong sense of responsibility; consistently sets high standards of excellence for herself/himself and others; provides guidance and direction to the MCG Student Nurses’ Association; and who demonstrates a true interest and belief in the goals of the MCG/SNA, the Georgia Association of Nursing Students, the National Student Nurses’ Association, and the profession of nursing.  An award of $100 is given.

To apply for this award, the senior BSN student must:

  1. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

  2. Submit a letter of application to the Dean of the School of Nursing describing activities, offices held, achievements, leadership activities, community service, and contributions to the local chapter (MCG/SNA), state (GANS), or National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). 

  3. Submit at least two (2) letters of recommendation from fellow NSNA members and/or faculty must be submitted (chapter advisors and deans are not eligible to submit letters of support since they serve on the award selection committee). 


 

Joyce E. Todd Scholarship Award

The Joyce E. Todd Scholarship Award was established by her family honoring her pursuit of nursing as a career as a non-traditional, adult student. Preference will be given to an adult learner who likewise is making a similar pursuit. An award of $500 will be given.

A. The applicant must be:

  1. Student pursuing a second career

  2. A first-year student who has maintained an overall 3.0 GPA in the program

  3. A student whose maturity has provided guidance and support to fellow classmates

 B. The applicant must submit:

  1. A resume describing work and life experiences

  2. Two letters of support. One should be from a nursing faculty and one from a fellow student.

C.  Priority will be given as follows:

  1. To a junior BSN student

  2. To a CNL student


 

George N. Stoney Student Scholarship

The MCG School of Nursing Minority Scholarship Fund was established for the specific purpose of providing tuition support for minority students. Two awards of $500 will be given. The student must demonstrate sufficient financial need and the award will be based upon academic standing and financial circumstances.  The applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a currently enrolled undergraduate student

  2. Submit a letter stating the extent of financial need

  3. Provide a current transcript


Kim Owens Memorial Scholarship

Kim Owens was a member of the Class of 2005 who passed away in December 2003. An award in the amount of $500 will be given to the recipient of this scholarship. 

The applicant must:

  • Be a currently enrolled junior BSN student;

  • Maintain a minimum grade of “B” in summer course 3100.

  • Present a 1000 word typed essay addressing all of the following issues:

    1. Explain why you chose nursing as a career.

    2. Describe your career goals.

    3. In what area or with what population do you want to work with and why?

    4. What has been the best experience you have had so far at MCG?  (Does not have to be related to coursework or clinical.)

    5. What do you think is the most important trait for a nurse to have?

    6. Why do you think you will be a good nurse?

    2. List/Brief Description of Volunteer Experience                

Applicant should be aware that:

  • Preference will be given to individuals with interest in pediatric population;

  • Attendance is required for Convocation on May 9, 2008.


Sibyl Bickers Hodnett Scholarship

The Sibyl Bickers Hodnett Scholarship Endowment was established by MCG School of Nursing alumna Judy Hodnett in 2007 in honor of her mother Mrs. Sibyl Bickers Hodnett, a retired nurse who has inspired many others. This $400 award is given to an undergraduate student pursuing a BSN degree. Selection is made by the School of Nursing scholarship committee. Candidates should adhere to these criteria:

    1. Be a currently enrolled junior undergraduate student
    2. Submit a letter stating:
      1. the extent of need
      2. how this money will be used to enhance your education
      3. who has most inspired you in your nursing career and why?
    3. Provide a current transcript
    4. Copies of two clinical evaluations

Dr. Elizabeth "Betty" Farren Pond Scholarship

The Dr. Elizabeth “Betty” Farren Pond Endowment was established by MCG School of Nursing alumna and former faculty member Dr. Betty Pond.  This $800 award will be presented to a junior or senior BSN student who meets the following criteria and is selected by the School of Nursing scholarship committee:

  1. Maintain a "B" average in each nursing course
  2. Submit an essay demonstrating why you require financial assistance
  3. Provide two letters of reference from MCG faculty members.
  4. Submit an evidence-based paper in APA format exploring a clinical issue you find to be important to nursing

Stephen Starnes Memorial Scholarship

Established by the Class of 2007 in memory of their classmate Stephen Starnes, this award is given to a senior BSN student who maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher.  Deserving students must be nominated by a nursing faculty member.  Award nominees should demonstrate a kind and caring personality, determination to succeed despite the many obstacles faced, and maintain a positive attitude/outlook on life.  An award of $200 will be given. 


Col. Vera Nolfe Anderson Memorial Scholarship

The Col. Vera Nolfe Anderson Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in memory and honor of Col. Anderson and her dedication to army nursing. The endowment provides a $2,000 scholarship to an undergraduate student pursuing a BSN degree in the MCG School of Nursing. Selection will be determined by the School of Nursing Scholarship Committee based on this priority:

  1. To a student who plans to pursue an Army Direct Commission following graduation, as an Army nurse
  2. To an active Army ROTC student who wishes to be an Army nurse
  3. To a student who wishes to pursue a nursing career in any branch of the military
  4. To a student with immediate family active any branch of the military
  5. At the discretion of the School of Nursing Scholarship Committee

Scholarship applicants must:

  1. Submit a paper discussing the following:
    • Your expectations of a career as a military nurse
    • What you hope to accomplish by pursuing a career as a nurse in the armed services
    • What area of nursing interests you and why
    • Your leadership potential

    NOTE: The paper must follow APA format, be typewritten and double spaced, with correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. 

  1. Submit three letters of recommendation from faculty members discussing applicant’s leadership abilities.
  2. Enclose a sealed copy of your most recent MCG transcript.
  3. Enclose a copy of all clinical evaluations.
  4. Submit a resume demonstrating leadership abilities listing accomplishments, honors and awards.

 

Alumni Association Awards

Donna M. Fair Scholar Award

The Donna M. Fair Scholar Award was established in 1999 in memory of Donna M. Fair, a professor and alumna of the MCG School of Nursing.  Joining the Department of Adult Nursing in 1973, she taught medical surgical nursing and served as Coordinator of the Nursing Skills Laboratory during her tenure at the School of Nursing.  Ms. Fair retired in 1995 and died in 1999.

An endowment has been established through a bequest from Ms. Fair to fund awards to students who demonstrate promise in specialty nursing fields important to Ms. Fair.  Two students, one undergraduate and one graduate, will receive awards annually.  The awards also consider leadership ability.  An award of $1,000 will be given to each of the winners.  The criteria are:

  1. Must submit a paper discussing the following question: “Would you pursue or are you involved in a nursing career in the specialty areas of respiratory care, rehabilitation, adult medical or surgical intensive care units (ICU, CCU) emergency specialty care unit (acute and trauma), surgical specialty care (operating room), post anesthesia specialty care (recovery room) and or primary care nursing (ANP, FNP)? if yes, discuss your interest and/or involvement in these specialties, and describe their impact on the field of nursing and patient care?”

  2. The paper must follow APA format, be typewritten and double spaced, with correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. 

  3. Must submit one letter of recommendation from a faculty member discussing applicant’s leadership abilities.

  4. Must enclose a sealed copy of your most recent MCG transcript, showing a GPA of at least 3.0.

 

A panel formed from the School of Nursing Alumni Association’s Board of Directors will determine the winner.


Leilee P. Ault School of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship Award

Leilee P. Ault was a founding faculty member of the School of Nursing and served in various capacities during her distinguished 32-year career. To honor Ms. Ault and the tremendous contribution she made to the School of Nursing and its students, the Alumni Association established an award in her honor.

Because of Ms. Ault’s belief that a nursing student should be involved in school, professional and community activities, candidates for the award must list their participation in these areas as well as write a brief paper, not to exceed two pages, describing their reasons for pursuing a career in nursing, their career plans, and their potential for leadership.

School of Nursing Alumni Association Board will determine the most deserving recipients.
