Learn more about the MCG Tobacco-Free Campus Initiative and Tobacco-Free Policy

A Special Message from Dean Marion

Thank you for your interest in the work we do for tobacco control. This is a particularly important time for us to help meet MCG’s mission of improving health and reducing the burden of illness on society. At the School of Nursing, one way we are doing this is through tobacco control initiatives with research, education, advocacy, and practice.

As a profession of promoting health and preventing disease, the School of Nursing will recognize November 15, 2007 as a historic date at the Medical College of Georgia.  This is the day we become tobacco-free, launching a campus-wide campaign to protect students, employees, patients, and visitors from exposure to secondhand smoke.  I am proud to acknowledge that several School of Nursing faculty members have been actively involved in leading this initiative to promote healthy behaviors and tackle tobacco use, the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.

Our Tobacco Cessation Program is facilitated by certified advanced practice nurses (a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatry/mental health, a family nurse practitioner, and an adult/acute care nurse practitioner) with over 50 years of combined clinical and tobacco cessation experience.  Treatment for tobacco use is available through our Nursing Faculty Practice Group in our clinic located on the first floor of the Health Sciences Building.

As recognized national experts with implementing and evaluating tobacco cessation programs, teaching tobacco education, and leading research initiatives related to tobacco control, the SON faculty and staff encourage you to be proactive in promoting healthy lifestyles for yourself and others. For more information about our Tobacco Cessation Program, the enrollment and appointments, and resources, visit http://www.mcg.edu/son/tcc.htm. We will be happy to assist you and your patients/colleagues overcome the powerful addiction of tobacco use.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lucy N. Marion, PhD, RN, FAAN

Dean and Professor
