SON Students Take Leadership at GANS Conference
University System Launches RN Workforce Survey

Ten SON students represented MCG at the 2009 Conference of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students last week in Athens. As delegates, the students attended business sessions and voted on important issues, including resolutions, bylaw changes, and officers. Annie Borst, 2nd vice president of the SONAT Association of Student Nurses, wrote and presented a resolution titled, "Advocating for Awareness of the Necessity for Psychosocial Support Programs for Returning Military Veterans", which was passed by the House of Delegates.

Three MCG students were elected to serve on the GANS Board of Directors - Augusta junior Reed Halterman (2nd Vice President); SONAT junior Michele Tovani (PR

Director) and SONAT junior Sunnie Hanson (East District Director).

In all, 25 SON students attended the state-wide convention along with faculty advisor, Dr. Kathy Shaw,  enjoying educational sessions and social events throughout the three-

day conference. The highlight of the conference was the awards banquet held Saturday night. The SANS Chapter was honored with the Financial Excellence Award for outstanding performance in the areas of fundraising and budget management.

"Our students were very visible at the convention, displaying leadership as students and advocates for the profession. I am very proud of all they've accomplished and for their dedication to the School of Nursing," said Dr. Shaw.

The Center for Health Workforce Planning and Analysis of the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents is conducting a short registered nurse (RN) workforce survey at the time of RN licensure renewal. This survey of all currently licensed RNs in Georgia was created to collect data on basic characteristics of the Georgia nurse population including demographics, pre-licensure nursing education, type of licensure, employment, and other topics.

After completing the licensure renewal form online through the Georgia Board of Nursing, the receipt page will provide a link to complete the short survey. The results will be used to provide accurate information about the Georgia RN workforce to legislators and key policymakers. A report on the survey results will be made available on the University System's website www.usg.edu. All SON faculty members who are also registered nurses are encouraged to participate.
