SON Employees Honored at Recognition Program |
Last week, several BSN students acted as mentors for AR Johnson High School students who aspire to become health care professionals. They assisted students taking a work-based learning course who will use the skills they learn in real work environments. These particular students were learning how to check vital signs in preparation for going out into clinical settings. "My students benefited so much from the one on one experience. They have made numerous positive remarks about how much better they understand and how they now will have more confidence when they go out, " said Rhonda Dunn, A.R. Johnson Work-Based Learning Coordinator who is also a registered nurse.
SON students worked with the high schoolers for several hours over two days to help them hone their skills. In all, eight BSN students participated, including
Danielle Kahn, Charlene Lioi, Jaime Martin, Rebekah Rodriquez, David Swanagan, Sadie Swanagan, Hannah Timmerman, and Kim Vicain. "I am very proud that our junior nursing students donated their time to assist these budding professionals. This was a win-win for all involved," said Rebecca Rule, BSN Program Director.

DOING OUR PART: Flu Prevention
"Stay Well, Stay Healthy, Stay In Touch" - that's the message that SON students will receive if they come down with the flu. "We are doing our best to prevent our students from getting sick at all, but if they do we want them to know that we are here for them," said Dr. Janie Heath, SON Associate Dean. This message will be attached to a nursing care packet that includes soup, nutrient drink mix, and other goodies that will speed along the healing process. "Our primary goal is to prevent the spread of flu, especially among our students. All of our pre-licensure students were given hand sanitizer pens that they can easily carry during class, labs, and clinicals," added Dr. Heath. Each pen bears the mantra 'An ounce of MCG Nursing prevention = a pound of FLU cure'. "This is our way of reminding students to take personal responsibility for their health as we all brace for what may be a challenging flu season," Dr. Heath stated. Students were also provided information about seasonal and H1N1 flu prevention and reporting policies. Nursing care packets are available at the Augusta and Athens campuses and can be requested by contacting class officers.
