Section of Pediatric Surgery

The Section of Pediatric Surgery is an integral part of the Medical College of Georgia
Children's Medical Center. The section is involved with patients ranging in age from
newborn to 18 years having all types of general and thoracic surgical problems. Particular
interests are in neonatal surgery, such as diaphragmatic hernia (and the ability to
provide ECMO, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), esophageal atresia and
tracheoesophageal fistula, Hirschsprung's Disease and neonatal intestinal obstruction.
Pediatric thoracic surgery problems such as empyema, tumors, pectus excavatum and
carinatum are also treated by our service. The active Children's Ambulatory Surgery
Program includes surgery for inguinal hernias, undescended testicles, umbilical hernias,
long term IV access, thyroglossal duct cysts and various other skin lesions. The Medical
College of Georgia Children's Medical Center is designated as a Level I Pediatric Trauma
Center; with the section coordinating the comprehensive Pediatric Trauma Service for the
child with multiple severe trauma.
