Transplant Service

The Transplant Surgery Service performs both kidney and pancreatic-kidney transplants.
Established in 1968, the service features integrated care by dedicated transplant surgeons
and physicians and has achieved excellent graft and patient survival. Patients are
generally referred by the patient's nephrologist or dialysis center. A comprehensive
pretransplant evaluation is performed prior to accepting patients for transplantation.
Special emphasis is given to the advantages of living-donor transplantation where
applicable. Postoperatively, patients are followed through the Transplant Program in
concert with the patient's referring nephrologist and personal physician.
Telephone consultations with the transplant surgeons and physicians prior to referral
is encouraged whenever there are questions regarding the patients suitability for
transplantation. Patients undergoing kidney transplants, pancreas-kidney transplants and
liver transplants at other centers are also eligible for postoperative care through the
Transplant Surgery Service. Patients requiring either new vascular access for hemodialysis
or revision or an existing access may be referred to the service. The Transplant Service
welcomes physician inquiries. The Kidney Transplantation Service welcomes physician
inquires. Telephone consultation is welcomed and encouraged prior to referral.
