Department of Surgery
General Information
The Department of Surgery provides inpatient, ambulatory and emergency
care for patients from throughout Georgia and the Southeast. The department
has expertise in all surgical specialties and is interested in patients with
any surgical disease. Surgical specialty sections include,
General Surgery,
Pediatric Surgery,
Plastic Surgery,
Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery and
Urology.
Faculty members have specialized training and board certification to
treat patients with simple and complex problems in general surgery. Several
sections within the
Section of
General Surgery are offered, including the
Gastrointestinal
Surgery Service,
Oncology
Surgery Service,
Transplant
Surgery Service,
and the
Trauma/Burn/Critical Care Service.
Special programs and interests of the Department of Surgery include: kidney
and pancreas transplantation; neonatal, adolescent, and adult extra
corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); hepatobiliary surgery; pancreatic
surgery; minimally invasive surgery; a
variety of pediatric surgical specialties; epilepsy surgery; colorectal
surgery; surgical treatment of burns; surgical nutrition; endoscopy;
microvalvular and limb implantation; and reconstructive and cosmetic
surgery.
Research efforts within the department are receiving increased emphasis and
are expected to expand significantly over the coming years. Areas of
research interest include nutrition, minimally invasive surgery, fibrin
glue, tissue typing, immunology, endocrine surgery, surgical infections, cancer, and
surgical simulation. The department also
provides programs in undergraduate and graduate medical education.
