Surgical Residency Program
Veteran's Hospital Rotation and Subspecialty Rotations
Guidelines for Each Level of Training by Service
General Surgery at the Veteran's Hospital
The overall goal of the multi-year exposure of the residents on the General Surgery Service at the VA Hospital is the ultimate production of an accomplished general surgeon skilled in the diagnosis, management and operative therapy of general and vascular surgical problems. The objectives are below by each level with the presumption that each level of advancement includes those objectives listed for the previous level. All of these levels include inpatient and outpatient contacts.
PGY-1 Level
  1. Diagnosis and Management - pre and post op care of general surgical and vascular surgical patients.
  2. Knowledgeable of general surgical and vascular disease, diagnosis and indications for surgery.
  3. Exposure to operative technique of amputation, hernia, etc.
  4. Exposure to critical care management.
  5. Teaching responsibilities for medical students.
PGY-2 Level
  1. Further knowledge of general surgical and vascular disease and critical care.
  2. Increased responsibility for patient management.
  3. Teaching responsibilities for medical students.
PGY-3 Level
  1. Further increased knowledge of general surgical and vascular disease and their treatment.
  2. Increased judgment and operative skill and patient care responsibility.
  3. Primary critical care responsibility for ICU patients.
  4. At this level the resident will perform some general surgical procedure.
  5. Teaching responsibilities for junior level residents and medical students.
PGY-4 Level
  1. Increased knowledge of general and vascular surgery diseases.
  2. Primary responsibility for off service consultation.
  3. Primary responsibility for upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  4. Primary responsibility for Uptown Division general surgical clinic.
  5. Teaching responsibilities for residents at junior levels and medical students.
  6. Increased operative responsibilities.
  7. Function as Chief Resident in his absence.
PGY-5  (Chief Resident)
  1. Increased knowledge of general and vascular disease and their management.
  2. Full responsibility for management of all general surgical problems.
  3. Senior responsibility for consultation on vascular and other general surgical problems.
  4. Knowledge of indications and techniques for various vascular and general surgical problems.
  5. Teaching responsibility for residents at junior levels and medical students.
