General Surgery Residency Program

Welcome Message from the Program Director

Our program emphasizes a close interaction between residents and faculty both in the operating room and out, the correlation of basic science information and clinical care, and extensive exposure to critical care medicine. We have a balanced program in General Surgery with good experience in all surgical areas.
If you are interested in a categorical position, the length of training is five years of clinical training. We encourage and strongly support a research year. This has been a very productive experience for our residents. The program is non-pyramidal.  We have one fellowship in the department:  Plastic Surgery. If you are interested in a surgical specialty, such as Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology or Urology you should communicate directly with the Program Director in those specialties. All candidates who match in the specialties will receive the core general surgery rotations in our Department.

Important Note from Program Director:

In the Fall of 2007 the NRMP brought it to our program's attention that the two designated preliminary urology residents had not gone through the NRMP Match in addition to their own Urology Match. It is a requirement for residents matching through the urology match to also match into a one year preliminary surgical position, and the latter is coordinated through the NRMP, while the former is through a separate urology match program. The problem arose from a confusion over the responsibility on the part of the urology and general surgery programs regarding the participation of the urology residents in the NRMP for a preliminary urologic position.

Historically the general surgery program had not submitted names to the NRMP, but rather allowed this to be coordinated through the urology program. When the residents names were not submitted to the NRMP by the urology program and GME office, and the NRMP noted that the general surgery program had given the urology residents the usual preliminary position without their participation in the NRMP match, they concluded it was a match violation on the part of the general surgery program.

We were unaware of this problem until the NRMP brought it to our attention and although the urology program director, general surgery program director, and chief or graduate medical education explained the miscommunication and misunderstanding as the basis for the incident, the NRMP has charged the general surgery program with the Match violation. This designation will be removed after a one year period, which should end in the fall of 2008.

This is the reason for the red flag you may see on the NRMP web site for our program.
