General Surgery Residency Program Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics
The
Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics serves the State of
Georgia and is the primary teaching and patient care site for the
Department of Surgery. MCG Hospital is a 520-bed tertiary hospital which
provides many services not available in any other facilities in the region.
Specialized services available at MCG Hospital include the region's
best-equipped and busiest Level I Trauma Center that cares for patients in
over 13 counties plus transplantation for
pancreas and kidney.
The MCG Ambulatory Care Center houses 80 general and specialty-care clinics. In addition, various hospital administrative and physician offices are located here.
The Children's Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the treatment and research of pediatric and adolescent diseases. As a result, this institution draws patients from the Southeastern United States who need specialized tertiary care. The Children's Medical Center has 157 beds and is the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in the State of Georgia. The Children's Medical Center is a major teaching site for surgery residents.
The Augusta VA Medical Center is a major 155-bed a facility for veterans in a primary service area that includes 17 counties in Georgia and seven counties in South Carolina; but as a member of the Atlanta Veterans Integrated Service Network, veterans who live as far away as Alabama may be cared for in the Augusta VA. This facility is affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. As such, all staff surgeons at the VA Medical Center have academic appointments at the School of Medicine. The service continues to encounter a wide variety of pathological conditions which require surgical treatment, thus providing a significant opportunity for faculty research and surgical education.
The Interdisciplinary Research Building, a 94,000-square-foot structure, houses the researchers, laboratories and equipment that will advance research in areas such as diabetes, hypertension, biotechnology and genomic medicine.
