Requirements to Complete the Residency
and Receive a Diploma

The MCG-VAMC Consortium requires that the following standards be met by the completion of the Residency. Diplomas are awarded after all requirements are met.

·        Completion of 2080 hours of training. Georgia requires 2000 hours of Residency training; we routinely provide 2100 or more. Required morning rotations are expected to be completed with no more than one week of vacation and one week of sick time per 4 months. If a Resident misses more than two weeks of a 4-month rotation block, the amount of time must be made up. The Residency will be a minimum of 48 weeks. Stipends will be paid up to the end of the scheduled Residency year. If makeup time is needed, it will be completed without remuneration.

·        Completion of 800 hours of direct clinical services. Direct clinical services includes all patient-specific clinical activities which encompasses individual, family, and group psychotherapy, consultations, psychological assessments (including test report writing), and therapy/assessment documentation.

·        Completion of all Rotations and Tracks with all supervisor evaluations indicating that the Resident's performance on each of the rotations is rated as "competent to implement interventions independently with supervision and review."

·        Completion of all seminars with all supervisor evaluations indicating that the Resident's performance in the Diagnostic/Treatment, Psychotherapy Process, and Professional Issues Seminars is rated as "competent to implement interventions independently with supervision and review."

·        Satisfactory completion of all medical record documentation.

·        Satisfactory completion of his/her agreed-upon research project - must have a good chance of becoming a journal submission in which the Resident is an author or co-author.

Required Seminars and Experiences
Residents must attend all required didactic training experiences. Required seminars are the Diagnostic/Treatment Seminar, the Psychotherapy Process Seminar, Professional Issues Seminar, and MCG Grand Rounds. Some workshops sponsored by Ft. Gordon Army Residency program will also be required.

Resident Research
The Resident is required to devote 4 hours each week to research activities. These activities can include Dissertation Work but must also be comprised of one or more of the following categories of research endeavors: A) participation in a Residency consortium related research project; B) scholarly review article, C) public policy "white paper," or D) program evaluation. This research must be approved and supervised by Residency faculty. Clinic research projects require formal approval by a joint MCG-VA Research and Development Committee.

Clinical Documentation, Chart Notes, Billing
Notes must be made in the appropriate chart for each visit or consultation. All notes must be signed by the Resident and countersigned by the appropriate faculty member. Maintenance of timely chart notes and appropriate billing encounter forms represents an important responsibility of the Resident. Typically, session documentation will be completed within 24 hours of patient contact. Tardiness of one month or greater in completing chart notes and billing encounter forms following a patient encounter will result in automatic "Probation Status" for the Resident and no leave requests will be approved until charting problems have been corrected

Other Requirements
The Resident is also expected to complete any other required elements of a particular Rotation and Track. These will be outlined at the beginning of rotations by the Rotation or Track Supervisor(s).
