Evaluation of the Residency
and Faculty by Residents

The consortium continually seeks to improve the training program curriculum and faculty performance. Using an electronic web-based program, every four months residents are required to complete the Rotation/Track Evaluation Form and the Trainee Evaluation of Core Faculty Form. These formal evaluation procedures provide feedback to the rotation and track supervisors regarding the overall quality of the training experience for the rotation or track as well as their experience with the core supervisors. In additional Residents are encouraged to provide specific recommendations regarding how the training experience might be further enhanced.

Rotation/track evaluations are reviewed by the relevant rotation/track faculty upon completion of the evaluation and electronically marked as having been reviewed by the faculty and the training director. Electronic review of these individual faculty evaluations, however, is made available to the faculty only once there is sufficiently accumulated data to protect the anonymity of the individual resident. At the midyear point and at the end of the training year, Residents are required to submit written and oral feedback reports concerning the quality of their training. The written and oral feedback reports are submitted in a full faculty meeting and copies of their written feedback are provided to all Faculty present and not present. The content and format of the Residents’ written and verbal feedback is at the discretion of the Resident class.

At the midyear point, the Training Director and the VAMC Training Director meet with the resident class to obtain their cumulative evaluation of individual faculty performance using the Trainee Evaluation of Core Faculty form. This information provides proximal data pertinent to faculty performance but also data relevant to the overall effectiveness of the training program. These individual faculty performance data are analyzed annually for program review as well as faculty performance feedback.

Evaluation data is used to evaluate faculty performance for annual job reviews and for departmental excellence in education awards. Faculty receive this information and are expected to use it as a basis for improvement if needed. The results of the individual faculty performance are also provided to the Faculty’s respective Administrative Service Chief. Finally, an Overall Training Evaluation Questionnaire is completed by the residents at the end of the training year and a post-graduation form is completed by the residents approximately 6 months after completion of the training year both which request information relevant for evaluating to what extent the residents believed that the training goals were achieved and to provide the graduated residents the opportunity to give additional feedback about ways of enhancing the program.
