Application and Selection

Below is the list of application materials that you will need to provide for us in order to be considered for our program. Please note that we use the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI) that can be obtained at the following website: http://appic.org. Also, note that we request that all letters of reference provide information pertinent to the following questions:

  • How long, and in what capacity have you known this student?
  • Estimate how many total hours you have supervised this student
  • Relative Strengths
  • Relative Weaknesses
  • Demonstrated Assessment Skills
  • Ability to form a Therapeutic Relationship
  • Relative Autonomy in Clinical Functioning
  • Considering the clinical potential of all graduate students you have taught, in what percentile would you place this student?
Please read the application materials carefully and be sure to submit all information requested. For your application to be complete at our consortium you must submit the following:
  • One copy of transcript from graduate psychology program
  • Curriculum Vita
  • 4 Letters of Reference
  • A typed copy (without identifying information) of a Psychological Evaluation
  • Standard APPIC Application for psychology internship
  • Verification of Internship Eligibility and Readiness
Applicant Qualifications:
Only applicants from APA approved doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology that require data-based doctoral dissertations will be considered. Residents are expected to have completed a minimum number of AAPI Intervention and Assessment Hours of 400. Applicants must have completed their Masters Degree requirements prior to the application deadline (if applicable in their doctoral program), must have Comprehensive Exams passed by the ranking deadline, and must have their Dissertation Proposal approved by the start of the residency.

Application Procedures:
The Consortium is a member of APPIC and we follow the current version of the APPIC Match Policies. Residents should review all APPIC materials as posted on the website (http://www.appic.org/). We use the APPIC standard application form. The deadline for receipt of your application form and associated materials is November 15.

Completed materials should be sent in one packet to:

Candidates are strongly encouraged to visit Augusta for an interview.
Lack of a personal interview does not exclude a candidate from receiving full consideration, however, successful candidates usually have completed a personal interview. Site interviews are offered on an invitation basis only and candidates are notified regarding their interview status as of December 15.

Interviews will be conducted during December and January. Interview slots are limited. We must have your completed application before scheduling an interview date. This interview is integral to our Resident selection process and provides an opportunity for you to gather valuable information regarding our faculty and various training sites. We will provide an opportunity for you to meet with current Residents over lunch to get their perspectives on the Residency experience.

A package of instructions will be sent to you upon request with various deadlines and the dates available. If you have further questions, please contact Dr. Nettie Albrecht at the VAMC.

Selection of Residents:
Offers are tendered through the APPIC National Matching program in strict compliance with the APPIC policy regarding Residency offers and acceptances. Applicants are similarly expected to conform their behavior to the requirements of this policy. All members of the Residency Consortium are Equal Opportunity Employers.

Background Checks/Drug Screening:
The VAMC performs security background checks on all employees before they can be hired. More specifically, all applicants selected for positions in the Department of Veterans Affairs that will last for a period of 180 days or more must now complete an electronic background investigation prior to beginning work. This electronic process called e-QIP (electronic Questionnaire for Investigations Processing) will allow the background investigation questionnaire to be completed and submitted online using any computer with Internet capability. Instructions for e-Qip will be provided by the Facility Human Resources office. As part of the background investigation your fingerprints will be taken electronically. The Human Resources office an make arrangements with the nearest VA facility to have fingerprints done and results forwarded to this VA Medical Center. Psychology Residents will be subject to random drug screening.
