Welcome to the Child and Adolescent

Psychiatry Training Program

This two year Residency is designed to provide qualified applicants comprehensive skills in the diagnosis and evidence based treatment of the full scope of child, adolescent and family psychopathology, utilizing the understanding of the principles of normal development throughout the life cycle. Appreciation of the interactive effects of child and family upon each other within a developmental context is emphasized. This emphasis is balanced by a commitment to teaching evolving knowledge in the neurosciences as it applies to child and adolescent psychiatric conditions. This program will provide the finishing child psychiatry resident the skills needed to function in any of the major areas of the discipline (academic, community-based, military-government, private practice and research settings). The child psychiatry resident will be trained to function as a leader of and collaborator with multidisciplinary teams in a variety of settings (child psychiatric inpatient, pediatric ward, schools, courts, mental health centers, etc.).

The Residency has been designed to provide a well-balanced clinical experience including: formal didactic seminars; continuing case conferences; supervised evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and families in an inpatient and outpatient settings; exposure to normal and abnormal children and families; consultation experience with pediatric services, public school psychoeducational programs, and youth rehabilitation programs; exposure to and opportunities to engage in research; and involvement in teaching other mental health and medical trainees.

The child psychiatry residency is affiliated with the general psychiatry residency in an integrated fashion. Residents frequently interact with general psychiatry residents in such settings as grand rounds, journal club, and on-call experiences. The residency draws on the experience of a diverse faculty, both full time and clinical. Areas of specific clinical and research expertise include: Asperger's Disorder, Eating Disorders, Personality Disorders in Adolescence, Family Therapy, Parent Management Training, Anger in Children and Conduct Disorders.
