Cardiovascular research is a strong and growing area of research in
our Department and at MCG at large. There are currently five principal
investigators based in Pharmacology and Toxicology (Drs.
Barman,
Caldwell,
Johnson,
Rudic and
White
as well as Drs.
Dimitropoulou,
El-Remessy,
and
Han) investigating questions involving cardiovascular sciences. We
are currently recruiting another faculty investigator. Our studies are
directed toward cardiac and vascular disorders including heart failure,
myocardial infarction, systemic and pulmonary hypertension, estrogen-related
cardiovascular disorders, and diabetes. In addition to our Departmental
faculty, there are cardiovascular investigators in the Department of
Physiology, Vascular Biology Center, Georgia Prevention Institute and the
Division of Cardiology. Collaborations among these groups abound. Some
of the postdoctoral and graduate trainees are being supported by Cardiovascular
Sciences training grants awarded to MCG. Our seminar programs bring leaders in
Cardiovascular Science from around the country and the world. Weekly journal
clubs provide faculty, students and post-docs the occasion to discuss cutting
edge cardiovascular research.
