The Medical College of Georgia is the health sciences university of the state of Georgia. MCG has more than 2,200 students in five schools: Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies and Nursing. The physical plant at the Medical College of Georgia includes modern classrooms and laboratories, a 520-bed teaching hospital, extensive out-patient clinics, residency halls, a student center, ample parking and an outstanding medical education library. The library contains more than 185,000 books and bound journals and some 1,301 periodicals. A Specialized Care Center/Ambulatory Care Center, a major addition to the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics, opened in 1993 with over 80 out-patient clinics in one convenient setting and a 13-county regional trauma center. A freestanding Children's Medical Center opened in 1998. The new 220,000-square-foot hospital has replaced pre-existing inpatient pediatric facilities and consists of 149-beds. Construction of a 42,000-square-foot fitness facility open to students, residents, and faculty/staff will begin in 2000. There are approximately 800 faculty members at the Medical College of Georgia. The School of Medicine has approximately 530 faculty.

The city is a regional center for industry, banking, shopping, entertainment and the arts and offers a stimulating cultural, educational, and recreational environment. Augusta is a center for sailing, hunting, fishing, tennis, boating and golf and is the home of the internationally famous Master Golf Tournament. Cultural life in Augusta includes a professional civic symphony, an opera company and a national honor ballet company. Augusta is located conveniently midway between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Atlantic coast, offering its residents prime choice of weekend getaways. Atlanta, Savannah, Asheville, and Charleston each are three-hour drives.
