Clinical Microbiology

Location: MCGH&C, Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, BAS-196

Enrollment:  1 Minimum, 1 Maximum

Prerequisites:  A Medical Microbiology Course

Duration: 4 weeks

Months Offered: June - November

Goals: To help the student understand the operation of a clinical microbiology laboratory and thereby promote effective utilization.

Objectives: At the end of the rotation, the student should be able to:

  • Properly collect common specimens for microbiology testing.
  • Complete the necessary requisition(s) including all relevant information.
  • Perform and interpret Gram stains, KOH preparations, India ink preparations, and bacterial antigen tests.
  • Describe the basic methods used for commonly ordered cultures and the expected turn-around times.
  • Interpret culture and susceptibility tests and integrate the results into the patient's diagnostic or treatment paths.
  • Discuss the limitations of commonly ordered tests.

Activities: The student is expected to devoted 40 hours a week to:

  • Clinical Pathology Conference (Tuesdays 8:30 - 10:00) and other sectional conferences.
  • Bench observation with technologists.
  • One hour meeting with Section Director daily.
  • Chart review and/or interface with clinicians for patients with complex results.
  • Independent study.

Lecture Hours:
Lab Hours: 20 weekly
Small Groups: 3 weekly
Clinic Hours:
Seminar Hours: 1.5 weekly
Other: Independent Study 15.5 weekly

Assessment:

  • Clinical performance evaluation by faculty to assess interpretative and integrative skills.
  • Clinical performance evaluation by technologists to assess understanding of basic testing requirements and methodology.
  • Clinical performance evaluation by pathology residents to assess participation in group learning activities.
