Location: Laboratory Services, VA Medical Center

Enrollment:  1 Minimum, 2 Maximum

Prerequisites:  Phase II

Duration: 1 month

Months Offered: Throughout the year

Goals: To help students to perform a number of basic anatomic pathology techniques and apply clinical judgment commensurate with their medical knowledge.

Objectives: Learn basic diagnosis through surgical and autopsy divisions in pathology department.

Activities:

  • Perform autopsy and find basic clincial pathologic correlations.
  • Participate in processing and examination of surgical pathology and cytology specimens.
  • Apply clinical interpretation and medical judgment in such examination.
  • Attend conferences and lectures.

Assessment: Evaluation performed on the following skills:

  • Gross examination of surgical specimens.
  • Microscopic examination of slides.
  • Case presentation.
  • Professionalism and attendance.

Note: An oral presentation is mandatory for performance excellence.
