Basic Neuropathologyy

Location: MCGH&C, Murphey Building, Anatomic Path Lab

Enrollment:  1 Minimum, 2 Maximum

Prerequisites:  Phase II

Duration: 1 month

Months Offered: September through May

Goals: To become comfortable with basic pathologic reactions in the nervous system and common disease involving the CNS, peripheral nervous system and skeletal muscle. The potentional exists for participation in research and publication.

Objectives:

  • Learn basic pathologic diagnostic approach through participation in the surgical and autopsy neuropathology service.
  • To successfully correlate pathologic diagnosis with clinical findings to help optimize therapeutic decision.

Activities:

  • Participate in routine microscopic sign out with faculty including biopsies and gross surgical neuropathology specimens.
  • Participate in the brain cutting and neuro-oncology tumor board conferences. Understand the importance of frozen section diagnosis during intraoperative consultations.
  • Assists house staff to obtain case related clinical data.

Assessment:

  • Students will be evaluated based on attendance and participation in assigned activities as well as basic fund of knowledge with focus on pathologic diagnosis and clinical correlations.
