The orthopaedic surgery residency program at MCG is a five year university based program with the PGY-1 year consisting of 12 surgical subspecialty rotations, and the PGY-2 through 5 years composed of three clinical orthopaedic sub specialty rotations each year. All rotations are located in hospitals on the main MCG campus located in Augusta Georgia.

MCG hospital and clinics is the main teaching hospital for the residency providing specialty orthopaedic rotations in: Adult Reconstruction/ Foot and Ankle, Sports Medicine, Hand and Upper Extremity, Spine, and Orthopaedic Trauma. The Children’s Medical Center is located adjacent to the adult hospital and is the location for two rotations on pediatric orthopaedics. Across the street from MCG, the VA Medical Center is the site for two Adult Orthopaedic rotations.

There are 10 full time and one part time orthopaedic faculty. There is one full time plastic surgery faculty and two full time podiatrists practicing as part of the orthopaedic residency. The resident to faculty ratio is essentially one to one.

Clinical experience for the residents includes seamless outpatient, inpatient, and operative exposure just as one has in a private practice i.e. the residents are involved in all aspects of care, including pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative and long term follow up.

MCG is a large medical school with a complete complement of clinical and basic science departments as well as a large medical library with many informational and research resources. MCG Hospital is the site where the majority of teaching conferences and research activities take place.
