General Residency Information

Patient Rounds
Rounds are made with the faculty and residents on a daily basis at the MCG, VA, and Pediatric services.

Call Schedule
Call averages 1 night in 3 for PGY 2, 3 and 4 years. A rotating intern will usually take call with the PGY 3 and 4. PGY 5 and 6 alternate back up call at home. On call meals and sleeping quarters are provided.

It is the policy of the Department that moonlighting is absolutely and strictly prohibited. Any resident found to be moonlighting is subject to immediate dismissal at the discretion of the Chairman of the Department.

Vacation
Each resident is allowed three full weeks (15 working days) of vacation each year. One of these vacations is required as Christmas vacation. This is in addition to time spent at meetings or courses. Time off for approved meetings will not count against annual leave. Residents are entitled to sick leave up to 14 days. Family leave is available. Vacation time can't be accumulated from year to year.

Other Benefits
Resident benefits include group health insurance for the resident, malpractice insurance, group life insurance, disability insurance, lab coats and laundering, and parking. Dental insurance, health insurance for the resident's family and additional life insurance are available at a small cost.

Facilities: The Residency hospitals include the Medical College of Georgia, Childrens Medical Center and the Augusta Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC).
