The Department of Medicine with over 140 faculty members is the largest Department on the Health Sciences Campus. The primary care, specialty, and subspecialty clinical enterprise of the Department  constitutes the largest practice in the Health System. The Department is involved in research, teaching, and patient care throughout the campus.

Research efforts span basic investigation centered in Institutes and Centers with Web links listed on this page as well as an active and growing clinical investigation and health sciences research program based in the Clinical Divisions. A well funded translational research program centering on developing new investigators is underway.

Educational activities include coursework for all four years of medical school as well as an active Internal Medicine residency program

and subspecialty fellowship programs in all 10 medical subspecialties. The Medical Student  and Post Graduate Residency and Subspecialty Fellowship programs are  the largest and most diverse on campus.

The clinical activities of the Department include primary care and the subspecialties listed on the left under Divisions. Inpatient activities are conducted at the 630 bed Medical College of Georgia Medical Center, Select Specialty Hospital, as well as the attached and fully integrated Augusta Veterans Administration Medical Center.  Ambulatory care is based on campus at specialty and subspecialty clinical practice sites as well as sites in the Augusta area and at outreach sites throughout the state of Georgia .
