Washington County

In the early 1990’s, the Medical College of Georgia entered into an agreement with the Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville to establish a multispecialty clinic to be staffed by faculty members from Augusta. Of the various specialty units established at that time, only that of Hematology/Oncology has survived.

Originally staffed by faculty members in rotation, it was held every other Thursday with a different faculty member each time. In 2000, the Section Chief Dr. Russell Burgess designated one faculty member to attend the clinic every time.

Once the physicians of Washington and Johnson Counties had a single physician to whom they could relate and view as one of their own, the referrals increased, the clinic expanded and it became necessary to hold it every week.

The clinic has been held weekly ever since. Currently, Dr. Amanda May and Dr. Russell R. Moores conduct the clinic, with one present every Thursday and both present almost every Thursday. Fellows, residents and students attend on occasion.

It is only the presence of outstanding nurses and outstanding hospitalists that allows us to comfortably practice Hematology/Oncology from a distance of 65 miles.
