The renal transplant program at the Medical College of
Georgia has two full-time transplant surgeons and two transplant
nephrologists who oversee the care of patients receiving deceased and living
donor renal transplants as well as simultaneous kidney-pancreas
transplants. This program has been one of the 50 most active transplant
centers in the country. With extramural grant funding, we have increased
our staff of coordinators and physician’s assistants which has helped our
waiting list grow to over 350 patients in the last two years. These
increased listings will facilitate increasing numbers of transplants at our
center over the next 3-5 year period. We have completed 110
kidney and 3 kidney-pancreas transplants of which 33 were living donor transplants as of January, 2008. We continue to be excited about our Phase II and III clinical trials; particularly with the prospect of using co-stimulation blockade as a replacement for
cyclosporine in the immunosuppression regimen along with minimizing the use of corticosteroids.
