end of mission statement...

Clinical training in patient care is conducted primarily at the MCG Hospital and Clinics, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  Training is graduated and comprehensive, with increasing levels of responsibility throughout the three year residency program.  Over the years, newer and more sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic modalities have been introduced into the training program, including cryosurgery, photo-testing equipment, phototherapy units, Mohs Micrographic Surgery and laser therapy.

Training in Dermatopathology is carried out through : (1) weekly pathology conferences in which biopsies from patients are reviewed with the dermatopathologist and unknown slides are discussed by the residents; (2) a series of didactic lectures in dermatopathology; (3) weekly slide conferences; (4) monthly visiting professors of dermatopathology; (5) travel allowances for dermatopathology seminars at a regional or national level.

Since 1967, over 100 residents have satisfactorily completed their residencies and 9 are currently in training.  The majority of trainees are in the full-time clinical practice of Dermatology, the majority being located in the Southeastern United States. Thirteen practice in Augusta.  However, former residents now are located as far as Texas, Arizona, California, Montana, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and New York.  Four former residents are in full-time academic dermatology.  The Dermatology Training Program continues to attract excellent resident applicants.  Currently, three residents per year are accepted for training.  In addition to dermatology residents, the department offers a one month elective in Dermatology to residents from other specialties including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Pathology.  Approximately 30-35 residents from these services are on the dermatology elective yearly.

Medical Students Training
Rotations in Dermatology for medical students are offered as one month electives. The number of students who take the elective ranges from 4-6 each month, some of whom are from outside medical schools.  In addition to clinical dermatology (experience in the clinics), students attend the various dermatologic teaching conferences (basic science, journal clubs, dermatopathology, morphology conferences, and grand rounds) and have a series of 16 didactic lectures as a core curriculum.  Many of the students have become interested in dermatology via the elective and have taken residencies in dermatology at MCG and elsewhere.

Graduate Student Training
During the early years of development, the Dermatology training grant enabled a number of graduate students (see appendix D) to obtain training in laboratories.  One of the students obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, another went on to graduate from medical school, and another is a Research Director for a major pharmaceutical company.  A number of Japanese physicians have had fellowships during the years and through their experiences at MCG have fostered significant international cooperation between the Department and various Dermatology departments in Japan.
