Cardiovascular Medicine

The Cardiovascular Medicine Division at MCG aims to become a national leader in cardiovascular patient care, education and research. Building on a strong reputation in cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology (e.g. the early descriptions of the adrenergic system by Dr. Ahlquist), cardiovascular research has grown to be the largest single area of investigation on the MCG campus. Internationally recognized cardiovascular researchers and physicians can be found in the Georgia Prevention Institute, Vascular Biology Center, Cardiovascular Biology Laboratory and the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology.

There are several areas of clinical excellence in new programs in Electrophysiology, Peripheral and Interventional Cardiology and Heart Failure/Transplantation. These build on strong programs in cardiovascular imaging, general and consultative cardiology. Clinical partnerships with Pediatric Cardiology provide additional care for adults with congenital heart disease. Integrated programs with Emergency Medicine facilitate the evaluation and treatment of patients with heart attacks in our Chest Pain Center. Collaboration and joint programs between cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery contribute to the high quality of patient care.

The depth and extent of the research, clinical and educational opportunities at MCG provide a superb environment for comprehensive training for medical students, residents and fellows. In addition to training at the MCG Health Center (licensed for 630 beds) hospital and clinical training is also provided at the Charlie Norwood (Augusta) Veteran’s Administration Medical Center which is licensed for 400 beds and, other medical sites.
