M.D./Ph.D. Program
General Information
Research Facilities
State-of-the-art research facilities are available at all four research campuses
of the M.D./Ph.D. program. In addition, a number of course facilities aid in
important key technologies, including DNA sequencing facilities at MCG and UGA,
peptide synthesis and sequencing facilities at MCG and UGA, a monoclonal
antibody facility at UGA, a transgenic and knock-out mouse facility associated
with the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Genetics at MCG, and fluorescence
imaging facility at MCG. The libraries of the four research campuses are
connected through the World Wide Web and share information on periodicals and
publications.
Financial Aid
Funding for the M.D./Ph.D.. Program comes from the State of Georgia and other
institutional funds. Students in the M.D./Ph.D. Program receive a tuition waiver
during all years of the program. The stipend for students
is $23,000, and stipend support is maintained throughout all years of the
program. No unfunded students are supported in the program.
Cost of Study
Most academic costs are covered by the M.D./Ph.D. program except for a $25 per
semester reduced tuition and fees totaling approximately $405 in fall, $268 in
spring, and $220 in summer. Students are responsible for optional comprehensive health
insurance. Microscope rental is presently $60 per year. The expense of supplies,
instruments, and books in the first year is estimated at $1900, with lower costs
in subsequent years.
Living and Housing Costs
Both on-campus and off-campus housing is available. The present on-campus
housing rate (with utilities and phone) is estimated at $248 per month. The
present off-campus housing rate (with utilities and phone) is estimated at $373
per month.
Student Group
The M.D./Ph.D. Program admits 4-6 students per year out of a class of
approximately 180 medical students. There are presently 22 students enrolled in
the program at various levels of study.
Location
The Augusta metropolitan area, with a population of more than 400,000, is the
second-largest metropolitan area in Georgia. Augusta is located between the
Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains with easy access to a number of
outdoor activities, including hiking, sailing, and river rafting. Cultural life
in Augusta includes a professional civic symphony, an opera company, and a
ballet company. Both Atlanta and Savannah are 2 1/2-hour drives from Augusta.
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, which lies approximately halfway
between Augusta and Atlanta. Both the Georgia Institute of Technology and
Georgia State University are located in Atlanta.
The College
Founded in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia is the eleventh-oldest
continuously operating medical education institution in the United States and is
third-oldest medical school in the Southeast. The Medical College is the health
sciences university of the University System of Georgia. The Medical College of
Georgia includes a 540-bed teaching hospital, and a regional Children's Medical
Center.
Applying
Students applying to the M.D./Ph.D. require previous substantive research
experience. Interested students should apply to the Medical College of Georgia
through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and check the
appropriate box on the secondary application form. MCAT scores are required for
application, but no GRE scores are needed. Admission to the program is not
limited to residents of the State of Georgia. Qualified candidates will be
interviewed by 2 members of the M.D./Ph.D. committee in addition to their
regular medical school interviews.
