Health Promotion: Health Fair

A Health Fair can be an effective community outreach to encourage participants to start thinking about health promotion and disease prevention. Each spring, the Department participates in a health fair hosted jointly by the Medical College of Georgia and the American Red Cross at a local mall. The Fair is held on a Saturday and representatives from various clinics and departments at MCG provide services and information, annually reaching hundreds of people. The Department participates in other Health Fairs as opportunities arise.

Following is a list of various activities and information the department has offered:

The 20 lb. Fat Vest Experience

A specially designed vest formed to look like fat is available for participants to wear for a few minutes and then to remove to experience the physical strain that occurs with weight gain and how good losing weight feels. Many are amazed at the difference 20 pounds makes.

Fat Gram Matching Game

Plastic food models (bologna, cheese, chicken breast, peanut butter, etc.) are presented with instructions to match them with appropriate amount of fat grams.

Family Health Tree Questionnaire

Participants provide family health information which is used to prepare a health genogram. Participants may then become more aware of illnesses/conditions in their families so they can take preventive measures.

Family Pictures

Using a digital camera and computer, a family portrait was taken and printed on a flier announcing health education classes.

Nutrition Information

Brochures about eating 5 fruits & vegetables a day and cutting fat from diet are available, along with heart-healthy recipes.

Class Brochures

Schedule of health education classes and invitation to attend.

Bright Futures Activity Books

These attractive coloring books available from www.brightfutures.org help teach children about health and safety and encourage family and community involvements.

Put Prevention Into Practice

Educational booklets encouraging patient participation in disease prevention through immunizations, screenings, etc.

Family Medicine Center Advertisements

Brochures and refrigerator magnets with phone number distributed.
