Department of Family Medicine
Research and Faculty Development

Our mission is to serve as catalysts for the pursuit
of knowledge, quality, health and possibilities

Healthcare is increasingly chaotic and challenging. It is hard for family physicians to provide optimal healthcare when they feel anxious, frustrated, and confused by all the changes taking place in the practice of medicine. Now more than ever, "knowledge is power:" power to take greater charge of your response to healthcare changes and power to become even more productive providers of important healthcare services.

We have divided our site into four content areas in which each family physician can become more powerful and less anxious by increasing his/her knowledge:

Health Promotion presents tools, training and key web links in the area of health promotion and disease prevention.

Faculty Development presents five core competency areas that are the focus of our departmental Faculty Development Program. these areas have been selected due to their relevance to the practice of medicine in contemporary America and their potential to increase physician practice effectiveness. They include: Evidence-Based Medicine, Quality Assurance, Teaching Efficiency, COPC and Medical Informatics.

Research/Publications describes the current work of our faculty, provides a description of the Southern Primary Care Research Network, and presents two departmental publications—Sonnets - A Post Journal Club Review and Evidence for Health.

Technology Initiatives presents the department's interests in the application of technology to the practice of Family Medicine. This section includes a description of our Medical Informatics Teaching Efforts, Using PDAs in Practice, links our students to our on-line clinical cases, and our other Information Systems.
