Urinary Tract Infections


1. Describe the method of collection (male and female) and the criteria a urine specimen must meet to be suitable for diagnosing a urinary tract infection.

2. List the differential to be considered in a female patient presenting with dysuria and/or pyuria.

3. Give reasons which serve to explain why a female prescribed antibiotic therapy for a UTI may continue to have relapsing or recurrent infections.

4. List symptoms and signs which would distinguish urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, vaginitis and prostatitis.

5. List the differential diagnoses to be considered with a UTI in an adult male, an elderly male and an elderly female.

6. Identify clinical findings which would support hospitalization rather than outpatient management of a urinary tract infection.

7. Contrast the management and follow-up of a male child, a female child and an adult who have been diagnosed as having a urinary tract infection.

8. List three drugs and describe a therapeutic regimen for their use in treatment of an uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection.

9. Contrast the criteria for diagnosis of a urinary tract infection in the following settings:

A. A female clean catch.
B. A male clean catch.
C. A female in and out cath.
D. A patient with chronic indwelling foley.

10. Describe an appropriate management plan for each of the following patients found to have asymptomatic bacteriuria.

A. Four-year-old female.
B. A pregnant female.
C. An elderly female.
D. An adult male with an indwelling catheter.
