Otitis Media/Externa



1. Identify conditions other than otitis media which cause otalgia in children and adults.

2. List and describe office procedures useful in assessing the clinical course of otitis media.

3. Discuss the bacteriology and pathophysiology of otitis media and how it influences antibiotic selection in children and adults.

4.  Discuss the concern over the "over-use" of antibiotics and the risk of bacterial resistance in children with otitis.

5. Describe two therapeutic regimens for the management of acute otitis media in kids.

6. Describe therapeutic options and educational counseling which might be given to parents of a child with chronic or recurrent otitis media.

7. Identify the acute and long-term complications associated with acute otitis media.

8. Recognize when a child or adult should be referred to an ENT specialist for management of recurrent ear infections.
