Mission Statement
The primary mission of the Department of Family Medicine is to provide quality predoctoral, resident and postdoctoral Family Medicine education in order to produce an appropriate supply of well-trained physicians to support the primary care needs of the State of Georgia. In order to fulfill that educational goal an effective and efficient model practice has been developed using a large ambulatory patient base. Students and residents learn clinical concepts and skills while practicing with academic and community-based family medicine faculty, who provide longitudinal and comprehensive health care to an identified patient population. Care in this setting focuses on the uniqueness of each person and family and the importance of promoting health, treating illness and advancing the knowledge base of family medicine. Further, in a fluctuating and changing health care market, we will continue to provide a group of patients who represent the full spectrum of health needs necessary to teach our students and residents skills necessary to be life-long learners and to provide quality primary care in the future.
In addition, the responsibility to advance scientific knowledge in the area of Family Medicine can best be achieved by focusing on research designed to improve the effectiveness of care delivered to our patients and the system used for students' and residents' education. Family Medicine is an integral part of the Medical College of Georgia and the patients we serve, and the students and residents we teach are critical to the overall educational, research and service goals of the entire institution.
