FMP 5021                   Health Disparities and Clinical Care of Special Populations--Family Medicine

Duration:                      1 month

Months Offered:          August, September, October, February

Goal: To provide students with opportunities to provide care to special populations and to increase students' understanding of the roles of race/ethnicity, culture, health literacy and poverty in health disparities.  

Objectives:      At the end of this elective, the students will:

--Have an increased understanding of issues affecting care of special populations such as homeless, racial/ethnic minorities, elderly and those with behavioral/mental health disparities, their causes and how a variety of factors influence the health of underserved and minority populations.

Be more comfortable with the provision of care to special populations.

--
Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.

--
Be able to address patient/physician/system roles in the development of disparities.

Activities:  Objectives will be met through the following methods:

Assist in provision of clinical services in commnity and institutional settings serving special populations, such as the Dearing Community Health Clinic, Good Samaritan Respite Center, Neighborhood Health Services Center, Family Medicine Center (psychotherapy/counseling).

Assessment:   Evaluation by faculty supervisor at each location is based on student’s performance in the following areas:  patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, and student's ability to consider issues of the special population served and the effects of these issues on patient care and outcomes.
