FMP 5019                  Procedures in Family Medicine
                                   
(Special Elective)

Prerequisites:                Completion of Core Rotations

Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:             August through January

Goal: To provide the student with an interest in family medicine exposure to procedures commonly performed by family physicians.

Objectives:        At the end of this elective, the student will:

  • Have been exposed to and participated in a wide variety of procedures including:  flexible sigmoidoscopy, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, minor surgery, joint injections, treadmill evaluations and osteopathic manipulations. 
  • Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Be able to identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
