Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:            July through June

Goal:  To provide the student with an understanding of the problems facing the homeless population and their health care.

Objectives:        At the end of this elective, the student will:  

  • Be able to provide health care to the homeless population at the Salvation Army Medical Clinic and St. Vincent DePaul Clinic.
  • Develop understanding through participation in weekly lecture/discussions on topics addressing events leading to a person becoming homeless and disease and illness in the homeless population.
  • Complete a project related to health care and the homeless and formally present it to the course director, students and other interested parties which could lead to publication.
  • Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Be able to identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
