Prerequisites:                Completion of Core Rotations

Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:             July through June

Goal: To provide the student with an in-depth exposure to the broad range of medical problems confronting the family physician in a hospital environment and prepare for internship.

Objectives:  At the end of this elective, the student will be
able to:

  • Assume responsibility for the primary medical care of patients on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service under close supervision from faculty and residents.
  • Perform a complete and comprehensive admission patient history and physical.
  • Develop an appropriate discharge plan.
  • Be able to recognize the importance of health maintenance.
  • Be able to recognize the importance of being the physician of first contact.
  • Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Be able to recognize medical emergencies, establish health care priorities and use proper consultation to aid in patient management.
  • Be able to provide patient care through appropriate diagnostic therapeutic management based on an awareness of cost.

Be able to identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
