Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:             July through June

Goal:  To provide the student with an in-depth exposure to the broad range of medical problems confronting the family physician in a rural environment.

Objectives:  At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate and manage patients with undifferentiated health problems in a rural setting.
  • Perform a complete and comprehensive patient history and physical.
  • Develop an understanding and appreciation for the uniqueness of rural health care practice.
  • Gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
