Prerequisites:                Completion of Core Rotations

Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:             July through June

Goal:  To help the student develop the skills necessary to function as a successful extern in the inpatient and ambulatory setting of family medicine.

Objectives:  At the end of this elective, the student will:

  • Be able to take responsibility for the continuing and comprehensive care of patients in both the ambulatory and inpatient setting under close supervision from faculty and residents.
  • Have an understanding of longitudinal care in the setting of Family Medicine.
  • Be exposed to other specialty/subspecialty areas of particular interest to the individual student.
  • Be able to recognize the importance of health maintenance.
  • Be able to recognize the importance of being the physician of first contact.
  • Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Be able to recognize medical emergencies, establish health care priorities and use proper consultation to aid in patient management.
  • Be able to provide patient care through appropriate diagnostic therapeutic management based on an awareness of cost.
  • Be able to identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
