Prerequisites:                  FMP5000 or MED5000 

Duration:                       1 month

Months Offered:             July through June

Goal:  To expose the student to the wide variety of medical, social, psychiatric and institutionally related problems in the geriatric patient confined to a nursing facility commonly encountered by the primary care physician.

Objectives:  At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  • Take responsibility for the continuing and comprehensive care of patients in the nursing home setting under close supervision from faculty and residents.
  • Have an understanding of common geriatric health problems and become acquainted with diagnostic and management requirements of this patient population.
  • Be able to gain the confidence of patients by meeting their health needs appropriately.
  • Be able to identify the health resources available in the community.

Assessment:  Clinical performance evaluation by faculty is based on student’s performance in the areas of:  patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and systems based learning.
