Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus

Dr. Karen Martin - Assistant Dean, Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus

Our Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus gives third- and fourth-year medical students a unique experience in one of the state's most historically-rich cities.

Based at St. Joseph's/Candler Health System in Savannah, the campus serves as a site for clinical rotations with more than 35 private physicians. MCG students can acquire extensive hands-on experience during rotations in internal medicine, neurology, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine and psychiatry.

St. Joseph's/Candler, noted as one of the country's Top 100 Integrated Health Systems by Modern Healthcare Magazine, offers local and regional primary care, specialized inpatient and outpatient services as well as a wide variety of community outreach throughout the region.

The Courses

MCG medical students can acquire extensive hands-on experience at St. Joseph's/Candler with more than 35 private physicians during rotations in internal medicine, neurology, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine and psychiatry.

In addition to St. Joseph's/Candler, students can learn side-by-side with physicians at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. MCG students have been rotating at Memorial and learning alongside its residents for over 30 years.

Soon, students can take third- and fourth-year clinical rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry and more at the Southeast Georgia Hospital in Brunswick, where more than 75 physicians have expressed interest in helping teach medical students.

MCG medical students already take clinical rotations in the southeastern Georgia cities of Jesup, Blackshear and Waycross, and MCG is hoping to expand into Statesboro.

The Community

Savannah, located in Chatham County, is the oldest and fourth-largest city in Georgia. Established in 1733, it was the first state capital. It attracts millions of visitors each year, especially for its historic district, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It is one of the largest historic landmarks in the country.

The Accommodations

While practicing at MCG's Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus, students have the opportunity to live at River Crossing Apartments located on the Wilmington River in Savannah's picturesque Thunderbolt district. St. Joseph's/Candler recently secured three apartments there for students. Close to Savannah's beaches and shopping centers, River Crossing is centrally located to all of historic Savannah.

"Students really appreciate and understand the fact that they can actually get one-on-one time with physicians, and they're learning side by side with them as peers."
